Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What type of materials do you use?

Q. What size parts can you make?
A. We currently operate pressers with clamping force ranging from 30 to 500 tons. We are able to create a tool for up to a four pound product.

Q. How much does it cost to have a mold made?

Prototyping
Q. How long will it take to get my quote?
A. We do not believe in a fast food mentality when it comes to your parts. We expect that the rapid prototypes you order are the first of many steps. Therefore we do not have an automated instant quote process. We prefer a more complete quote process, something that cannot be provided through electronic means only. That being said request for quotes are guaranteed in 24 hours.

Q. What types of files do you accept?
A. SLA, IGES, STP are the most common formats we utilize.

Q. What if I do not have a solid model of my part? What if I only have a drawing or a sample I need reverse engineered?
A. This is not a problem and can sometimes be beneficial as it allows us to incorporate those features that make the part more cost effective to produce, thus saving you money.

Q. What should I expect to pay for my prototypes?
A. Chesapeake Plastics bases the cost on the volume and size of the parts. The machines themselves run unattended and therefore have very low overhead that we pass along to the customer.

Kickstarter & Crowdsourced Projects
Q. I have a great idea, but I don’t know where to start. Can you help?
A. Yes! Our engineers can take your ideas and turn them into a reality. We pride ourselves on providing end-to-end manufacturing services. That means we can take your idea and make it into an actual product all under one roof in our Southern Maryland facility. We have experience working with Kickstarter Entrepreneurs and can help you create the designs/plans you need to get your idea off the ground. Of course, you are always in control of your idea, but our team has technical experience and will provide practical advice on creating the most beneficial product to achieve your objectives.

Q. Is there a way to validate the feasibility of a product idea before I get started on a crowdsourced project? A. Of course. Our design team can take your product ideas and turn them into a reliable 3D design. With over three decades of experience in designing, building and manufacturing injection molded products, our team can provide the guidance necessary to begin a crowdsourced project.

Q. Can you create a prototype for my crowdsourced project?
A. The best part about working with Chesapeake Plastics for your next invention or Kickstarter project is that we can handle the entire process, end-to-end. We are able to produce a Proof-Of-Concept Prototype, which will function just as the product will when mass produced. A prototype is required when starting a crowdsourced project and can build confidence in those individuals who back your project.

Q. How much is my upfront cost going to be for design assistance and a prototype?
A. The cost of a design and prototype will vary based on the complexity of the design and the number of parts but you can always Request a Quote on our website and we will be in contact with you in one business day. Typically, designs can be completed for approximately ____ and prototypes can be built for _____.

Q. How long does it take to build a prototype?
A. We pride ourselves on being able to produce a high quality prototype almost as quickly as you order it. Although it does depend on the complexity and number of parts, we can typically build a prototype in only one week.

Q. Will you take a percentage of sales if this project is successfully funded?
A. No, you simply pay for any of the services we provide. Any products we create for you (designs, prototypes, tools, molded products) are your property.

Q. If my crowdsourced project is successful, I’m not sure how many items I would need. Is there a minimum number of items I would have to purchase? A. We are proud to offer true Low Volume Manufacturing. Many of our competitors call 10,000+ parts low volume, but we understand your first run might only be 100 parts. We are flexible enough to accommodate runs as low as 64 parts but have the capacity to produce as many as 80,000 parts per month.
